Advisory for Tuesday, September 17: For First Time in A Decade, Senate to Hold Hearing Solely Dedicated to Private Student Loans

SBPC Policy Director and Long-Time Student Loan Expert to Provide Testimony along with Dalié Jiménez, Co-Founder of the Student Loan Law Initiative

September 12, 2024 | WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protections will convene a hearing on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to discuss the private student loan debt crisis across the United States. This hearing, “Back to School: Shedding Light on the Risks and Harm in the Private Student Loan and Servicing Market,” marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in over a decade that the Senate Banking Committee has convened a hearing solely focused the harms imposed on students and borrowers by private student lending.

The hearing will feature testimony from Aissa Canchola Bañez, Policy Director at the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC), and Dalié Jiménez, Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law and Director of the Student Loan Law Initiative (SLLI).
