Scholars Discuss and Release New Research on the Broad and Transformative Impact of Student Debt Cancellation and Payment Pause on Borrowers’ Lives

April 25, 2024 | WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) and the UC Student Loan Law Initiative (SLLI) hosted a virtual event featuring new research on the impact of student debt cancellation, the student loan payment pause, and borrowers’ experiences with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

The new reports, led by Dr. Dan Collier, Assistant Professor of Higher and Adult Education in the Department of Leadership at the University of Memphis, are available here and listed below:

The event featured:

  • Dan Collier, Assistant Professor of Higher and Adult Education in the Department of Leadership at the University of Memphis. Dr. Collier will discuss new research unraveling the experiences and insights of borrowers enrolled in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, in particular the financial and psychological impacts of the student loan debt pause and the impending resumption of repayments on borrowers’ lives. Drawing from firsthand accounts of loan forgiveness recipients, this research also uncovers the transformative and holistic power of debt relief, from heightened career autonomy to improved mental well-being, Finally, Dr. Collier will discuss research examining the vital role of online communities in navigating the complexities of loan forgiveness, offering insights into building trust and finding support amidst administrative hurdles. 
  • Adam Goldstein, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs and Ralph O. Glendinning University Preceptor at Princeton University. Dr. Goldstein will discuss forthcoming research co-authored with Dr. Charlie Eaton, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Merced, which uses data from the University of California Consumer Credit Panel  (UC-CCP) to examine borrowers’ experiences with income-driven repayment (IDR) plans and the ways that IDR produced highly stratified and unequal patterns of negative amortization and runaway loan balances.
