Protecting Military Borrowers

How the Department of Education can restore the promise of Public Service Loan Forgiveness for American servicemembers

This report examines the roadblocks that members of the military face in accessing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)—roadblocks that affect the financial security of these servicemembers and the military readiness of our Armed Forces. Administrative hurdles and servicing breakdowns exist throughout the PSLF program, but are especially prevalent for members of the military.

The report lays out how the Secretary of Education can utilize the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students (HEROES) Act of 2003 to chart a path forward to ensure all servicemembers with student loans can access the protections they have earned through service to our country.
