Preliminary Economic Analysis of Senate Proposal on Student Loan Repayment

On June 10, 2025, U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee chair Bill Cassidy released a sweeping reconciliation bill that guts critical protections for student loan borrowers, restricts access to higher education, and costs families thousands of dollars—all to deliver tax cuts for the wealthy. In response, the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) sent a letter to the Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy and Ranking Member Bernie Sanders detailing that a typical borrower will see monthly student loan costs spike by hundreds of dollars per month, or thousands of dollars per year.
