Attorney General Raoul Applauds House Committee Passage of Student Lending Legislation

House Bill 2746, sponsored by Rep. Katie Stuart, was passed unanimously by the Higher Education Committee. A decade after the law was passed, she has held up her end of the deal yet remains saddled with debt she should not have to repay. Experts Detail How Student Loan Debt Is Strangling Black and Latino Students

Kat Welbeck, a civil rights counsel at the Student Borrower Protection Center, said lack of generational wealth plays a role in student debt. She pointed out that Black and Latino students tend to have higher debt burdens because their families don’t have the financial resources to pay for college, so they have to borrow more money.
