MO Borrowers, MO Problems: How One MAGA Attorney General Tried to Break the Student Loan System and Drive His Own Constituents Deeper Into Debt

This report from the Student Borrower Protection Center and the Debt Collective analyzes complaints submitted by student loan borrowers to Missouri Attorney General (AG) Andrew Bailey’s office about the Higher Education Loan Authority of the State of Missouri (MOHELA). Over the same time period, Missouri AG Bailey has repeatedly sued to block the Biden-Harris Administration from delivering student loan borrowers any form of relief, leaving hundreds of thousands of Missourians deeper in debt.

The borrower complaints, which were obtained by a Missouri Sunshine Law request, demonstrate a clear pattern: MOHELA is failing to provide borrowers with accurate, reliable, quality service.

On October 24, 2024, the Missouri AG will once again argue before a court that MOHELA’s profits are more important than the finances of hundreds of thousands of Missouri residents and their families. In the report, SBPC and Debt Collective call on federal and state law enforcement to hold MOHELA accountable.
