Advocates Condemn Decision; Coalition Defending the Bureau Expected to Appeal, Which Automatically Blocks This New Decision Temporarily
August 15, 2025 | WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, two Trump-appointed appellate judges in the DC Circuit issued a partisan decision overturning a court order that blocked CFPB Acting Director Russ Vought from dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Today’s 2-1 decision does not immediately take effect, as the court provided the coalition of parties fighting to preserve the vital consumer watchdog with the opportunity to file an appeal, which automatically and temporarily stays the effect of the new ruling.
Since Trump Administration officials took control over the CFPB, agency officials have taken actions that will cost working families $18 billion while handing out dozens of corporate pardons to financial firms accused of a shocking range of illegal activities.
In response to today’s decision, Mike Pierce, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center and a former Deputy Assistant Director of the CFPB, issued the following statement:
“The dismantling of the CFPB serves no one except billionaires and big businesses, and today’s decision shows that right-wing officials across every branch of government are working hand-in-glove to consolidate corporate power while screwing over the rest of us. The CFPB is the last line of defense for working families and honest businesses against the relentless wave of fraud and abuse by Wall Street and Big Tech. Should Trump and Vought succeed in destroying the CFPB, Americans will have no one to look out for them as Trump’s economy craters.”
