SBPC Applauds the Appointment of FTC Commissioner and Former CFPB Student Loan Ombudsman Rohit Chopra to CFPB Director

January 17, 2021 | WASHINGTON, DC — Today, President-elect Joe Biden announced that he will nominate FTC Commissioner Rohit Chopra to be the next Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Student Borrower Protection Center Executive Director Seth Frotman issued the following statement:

“This is great news for American families. Rohit Chopra is the perfect choice at this moment in time to lead the nation’s consumer financial watchdog and ensure the needs of borrowers are at the forefront.

Rohit was a trailblazer in the fight to protect student loan borrowers. From cracking down on predatory for-profit schools to rooting out unscrupulous lenders and abusive student loan servicing practices, he not only gave a voice to the tens of millions of Americans struggling under the weight of student debt, he delivered results. Utilizing this same tenacity and vision, Rohit will be a champion for the hundreds of millions of Americans who are forced to deal with the predatory companies that have gone unchecked for the past four years.

As families across the country face the fallout from the global pandemic and economic crisis, there has never been a more urgent need to reform the broken student loan system and address predatory players that have plagued the market for far too long. Rohit will get the job done.”
