    Student Loan Debt and Prisoners

Nearly 250,000 of the nation’s 2.3 million prisoners are burdened with student debt they cannot pay because of their imprisonment. A July 2022 joint report by the Student Borrower Protection Center and National Consumer Law Center noted that prisoners earn pennies an hour, if they are paid at all. They can’t afford postage, much less debt payments, and accessing their trust funds often takes weeks. This practically ensures late payments.

When This Pilot Quit Her Job, Her Employer Billed Her $20,000

Fredericks filed her lawsuit with the help of Towards Justice, a legal aid group assisting workers, and the Student Borrower Protection Center, a nonprofit watchdog of the student loan industry. Attorney Mike Pierce, the center’s director, said Ameriflight’s repayment agreement is another illustration of employers trying to foist the cost of workforce training onto workers.

Federal Student Loan System In Need of ‘Robust Interventions’

Bonnie Latreille, the FSA ombudsman and co-founder of the Student Borrower Protection Center, took over the ombudsman’s office in July 2021… Mike Pierce, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, said the ombudsman’s report did a good job of highlighting the pain points in student loan policy and putting a face on the issues. “The previous [ombudsman] reports have been technical and dry and didn’t do a good job of lifting up borrowers’ voices,”…

Biden Proposes Student Loan Plan that Could Save Borrowers Thousands. What to know.

“For nearly three decades, IDR has failed to live up to its promise of an affordable lifeline for federal student loan borrowers. Instead, the program perpetuated an inescapable debt trap–leaving millions of borrowers vulnerable to devastating collection tools,” Yu said in a statement. “By canceling any unpaid interest each month, reducing monthly payments, and providing access to defaulted borrowers, the Biden Administration has begun to deliver on the original promise of IDR,” according…

‘A huge mistake’: Lessons from the JPMorgan-Frank fintech deal

“If Frank’s primary function was to get people through the financial aid application, and Frank promised to JPMorgan Chase that their account holders comprised [4.25] million people, that would be a quarter of all financial aid applications in America, depending on how you measure it,” said Mike Pierce, executive director and co-founder of the Student Borrower Protection Center, a nonprofit that focuses on student debt. “There should always be skepticism about how these…

Defaulted Borrowers Must Be Included in the Income-Driven Repayment Account Adjustment

This memo urges the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to reconsider its exclusion of periods of time in default from the one-time Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Account Adjustment, which ED announced as a remedy for borrowers who have been steered into forbearance or otherwise knocked off course from IDR cancellation.

‘Transcript ransom’ bill would help job-seekers owing debt to colleges

In the past few years, just over a half-dozen states have passed related laws targeting transcript withholding. The movement represents a paradigm shift as policymakers and colleges begin to rethink what has been a common but ineffective tool for debt collection, said Winston Berkman-Breen, deputy director of advocacy and policy counsel for the nonprofit Student Borrower Protection Center. “There’s no intrinsic value to the transcript to the school. It’s only a tactic to…

Student-loan borrowers’ ‘monthly costs could rise dramatically’ this year if Biden’s debt relief gets struck down, Elizabeth Warren says. She wants to know how that would impact you.

In a series of letters Massachusetts Sen. Warren sent out on Wednesday, she asked nearly 20 advocacy groups — including the NAACP, the Student Borrower Protection Center, and The Debt Collective — how the efforts to block President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers are impacting the groups’ members.

What student-loan borrowers should know about Biden’s new debt relief proposals — and why advocates argue they’re not enough

Advocates lauded the proposed improvements but expressed disappointment with this exclusion. “It ignores the reality that low-income families—especially low-income families of color—are more likely to rely on Parent PLUS loans or need to get a graduate degree to earn the same salary as their wealthier white peers,” Persis Yu, deputy executive director of advocacy group Student Borrower Protection Center, said in a statement.

Biden has a backup plan for student debt relief. Here’s how it works.

The IDR overhaul “is hugely important,” Persis Yu, deputy executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC), an advocacy group for people with student debt, told CBS MoneyWatch. “We see so many borrowers say, ‘I don’t get it — I took out $15,000 and now I owe $40,000,’ which is emotionally demoralizing and financially devastating.” IDRs “worked in a really toxic way before,” she said.

SBPC advocates to protect student loan borrowers.
