Aidvantage/MAXIMUS

We are fighting to hold Maximus accountable for years of mismanagement and abuse.

Maximus is one of the largest student loan companies in the country, servicing and collecting on loans owned by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). In 2021, Maxmimus took over loan servicing for Navient when the scandal-plagued student loan giant surrendered its federal student loan servicing contract. Maximus now services federal student loans under the brand name Aidvantage and runs the servicing platform and call centers used by ED to collect on defaulted student loans.

What We’re Doing

Maximus’s history of mismanagement, abuse, and unlawful conduct has made it a target for private lawsuits and congressional oversight. See below to learn more about our work to hold Maximus accountable.

A New Debt Collection Lawsuit Gives us a Glimpse at the Future of Student Loan Servicing for Tens of Millions of Borrowers

In her complaint, filed by our partners at the National Consumer Law Center and Justice Catalyst Law, she alleges that the company ignored its duty to stop collecting against her—a right she is guaranteed under rules that protect borrowers defrauded by for-profit colleges. In the process, her student loan company violated a federal consumer protection law, known as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
