    On the day of the oral arguments on Feb. 28, more than 20 advocacy groups and several congressional Democrats are planning to rally outside the Supreme Court.     Student Loan Debt and Prisoners

    Nearly 250,000 of the nation’s 2.3 million prisoners are burdened with student debt they cannot pay because of their imprisonment. A July 2022 joint report by the Student Borrower Protection Center and National Consumer Law Center noted that prisoners earn pennies an hour, if they are paid at all. They can’t afford postage, much less debt payments, and accessing their trust funds often takes weeks. This practically ensures late payments.

    Amicus Brief Supporting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Right to Sue the National Collegiate Student Loan Trusts for Cheating Borrowers

    On November 14, a coalition of non-profit organizations—including Student Borrower Protection Center; Community Legal Services of Philadelphia; Delaware Community Legal Aid Society; New Jersey Citizen Action; and New York Legal Assistance Group—filed an amicus brief to support the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) efforts to hold the National Collegiate Student Loan Trusts (NCSLT) accountable for unfair and deceptive conduct harming student loan borrowers.
