State Law Enforcement

State attorneys general enforce state and federal laws that protect families from abuses by lenders, financial firms, and other companies across the economy.

State attorneys general are states’ top enforcement officials, demanding justice for borrowers who have been cheated by businesses, including financial companies, operating in each state. State AGs brought Navient to justice, freed workers from predatory training debt, and shut down scam schools in all 50 states.

What We’re Doing

We work to help state AGs build cases against private companies that cheat borrowers out of their rights, enforcing the state and federal laws put in place to protect families from fraud and abuse. We also work in partnership with state AGs to demand policy changes at every level of government—state AGs are powerful advocates for borrowers in state capitals and in the halls of Congress.

How Debt Collectors Are Transforming the Business of State Courts

The business of state civil courts has changed over the past three decades. In 1990, a typical civil court docket featured cases with two opposing sides, each with an attorney, most frequently regarding commercial matters and disputes over contracts, injuries, and other harms. The lawyers presented their cases, and the judge, acting as the neutral arbiter, rendered a decision based on those legal and factual arguments. Thirty years later, that docket is dominated…

Supporting States in the Fight to Protect Borrowers

States are on the front lines of the student debt crisis. State legislators and policymakers are among the first to hear stories of struggling borrowers, learn about industry abuses, and spot problems and trends in communities. Many states are also playing a critical role in overseeing student loan companies and cracking down on predatory practices by enforcing consumer protection law.
