In May 2022, a broad and diverse coalition of 529 organizations sent a letter to President Biden urging him to immediately cancel student loan debt via executive action. The number of organizations signed onto the letter continues to grow. As of June 6, 2022, the letter expanded to include 552 community, civil rights, education, climate, health, consumer, labor, professional, food and farm, and student advocacy organizations.
The letter details how broad student debt cancellation is key for narrowing the racial and gender wealth gaps, strengthening the economy, and providing much-needed relief to help all Americans weather the pandemic and record inflation.
Among the new groups signed onto the letter is a historic showing of prominent union support including Amazon Labor Union and Starbucks Workers United.
